New sprawling double album from Roro Perrot AKA Vomir. Trou Aux Rats is an analogue nightmare dealing with Romain's obsessions: a fetishisation of solitude and the inanimate.
With 26 odes to death taking up nearly three hours, and with little in the way of traditional structure, this can be heavy going....but then if you're reading this and familiar with Vomir, Falot, Rompari Etron, then you know the score!
Themes of decay and isolation are clear through the crumbling blasts of noise, mumbled looped vocals, Phantom Of The Opera organ lines, and sudden end of tracks from nowhere. The naivety of early Maurizio Bianchi is echoed (literally!) here not just with heavy reverb on most sounds, but in the sense that you can hear things getting plugged in, ideas changing as songs develop: true experimental music with absolutely zero regard for orthodoxy or convention. I've found it can at turns be an impenetrable record or - mood dependent - an utterly compelling, enthralling listen.
People talk a lot about atmosphere in music. This music is ONLY atmosphere. A true aura.
